Imported watches were made with the Waltham name on the face after that. Waltham Watch Company manufactured both watches and clocks through the late 1950s. The name was changed again to American Waltham Watch Company in 1885 and finally became Waltham Watch Company in 1906. During the Civil War years, the firm barely stayed afloat by cutting expenses to bare-bones levels. ![]() Through a merger at that time, American Watch Company was formed. The company had a bumpy ride early on with costly production challenges and reorganizations until early 1859. The factory most often associated with this business opened in Waltham, Massachusetts, in 1854. Production timepieces were not sold to the public until 1853. The first watches made were kept by the company's owners. Later, the name changed to Boston Watch Company. The firm operated under the name American Horologe Company. They set out to take American watchmaking from a cottage industry to a mechanized process using easily interchangeable parts. The business that would become the Waltham Watch Company was founded by David Davis, Aaron Dennison, and Edward Howard in 1850. ![]()
